Visitors with disabilities who require specific toilet facilities will be even better catered for at this year’s Royal Cornwall Show (6-8 June).
Organiser of the event, the Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association (RCAA), has taken the step to install a Space to Change toilet at the Royal Cornwall Events Centre, Wadebridge to ensure the venue is as accessible for as many visitors as possible.
A Space to Change facility is a fully accessible, spacious 7.5m2 room complete with a toilet, adult size height adjustable changing bench and a hoist for people whose disability means they are unable to use standard, less roomy wheelchair-accessible toilets.
Oli Old, showground manager at the RCAA said:
“We became aware of the need for this kind of facility and hired a temporary version in recent years for the Royal Cornwall Show to enable as many people as possible to enjoy Cornwall’s largest annual event.”
There is around a quarter of a million people in the UK that require this type of facility, including people with profound and multiple learning disabilities, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis and cerebral palsy.
“It was obvious that a more permanent solution was required and with some clever planning we have been able to create a Space to Change toilet within one of our existing washroom blocks which is located next to our exhibition halls.”
The venue not only plays host to the three-day Royal Cornwall Show each June but countless other events make use of the facilities each year.
“It is pleasing that we are now in a position to accommodate those needing this type of facility and making not only the show but also the numerous well attended public and private events that take place here accessible to one and all,” Oli concluded.
Emily Hudson, who grew up in Wadebridge and enjoys the Royal Cornwall Show, has a young son that needs such a facility. She said:
“My son Logan is 6 years old and requires a Space to Change toilet with a full-sized change bench and hoist. Without this toilet facility, we can only visit somewhere for a few hours before having to rush home.
“I was so pleased to hear that Royal Cornwall Events Centre has installed this toilet as we can now visit the show as a family for a full day out. We are looking forward to enjoying all the events at the venue and plan to visit Creation Fest and the Cornish Winter Fair as well.”
